BMW 6 Series - basic body shape

It's been a while since my last post and many things have happened in the meantime. The reason for this is first of all because the next day after my last post disaster struck. The .max file I had worked on was corrupted and I couldn't manage to save my last days' work. This is why I had to remake most of the details on the front bumper. I also had to redesign the hood, since it had too many vertices and it was too difficult to control. And while I was at it, I thaught about implementing a new modelling technique which is a combination between box-modelling (often used in car-body design) and mesh editing. All this just to speed-up the work Nevertheless, I'm still not sure exactly how I will pull off all the details and the turning point, when I will have to detach all the components into individual objects is coming. Right now, all the existing components like the doors, the roof, the wings, except for the hood and the front bumper are all part of one single object.

BMW 6 Series - added details to front bumper

I've worked a bit on the details, although normally it's probabily best to do this at the end, when all the parts are already modelled. But I did it just to convince myself that I could actualy give the car the amount of details necessary to make it look real. The conclusion is that taking care of the details is very time-consuming, but very important as well, because it's the small things that really make the difference...

BMW 6 Series - finished basic shapes for hood and front bumper

Here's an update on the current work progress... The basic shapes of the hood and the front bumper are ready. What need to be done next is adjust the details. I believe I have finally come accross the best modelling technique, involving mostly just Editable Poly tools. Until yesterday I used to spend a considerable amount of time doing my best to achieve perfection through all sort of miscellaneous techniques and ideas that only I could have thought of. This is because I wanted to obtain perfect shapes even from the beginning. But today, I have given up all those concepts because they were really unpractical. While browsing through tutorials and other documentation files on the internet, I learned some key concepts which have finally led to the "revelation".
I believe from now on, work will accelerate due to the experience I have gained and I'm desperately looking forward to build more and more of the BMW. I'll be back soon with more details. :)

BMW 6 Series - finished modelling the first component

I've finised the first part - the wing (? - I'm not sure if that's correct). This is actually the second time I've modelled the wing, since I wasn't satisfied with the first result. It looked OK but I realised it would have been very difficult to try to build the rest of the components based on that first model. For those of you who know a bit about 3D modelling... I've transformed it into an editable poly a little too soon. I know that 3 days is a bit too long for only one component, but it wasn't just wasted time. I've learned quite a lot of tricks along the way and I also believe it's best to study several techniques before starting to model the rest of the car, because there will be no turnin back from that point on.
